Nervous System Tumor Bank, TWH Bobank, Canada

Registration Status: Completed

Objective: The specific aims of the Nervous System Tumor Bank (aka TWH Bio bank) are to support and promote biological research on human nervous system tumors by providing researchers with optimally collected and stored neurosurgical operative specimens, to ensure the quality control of the specimens and to provide corresponding clinical and pathological data to facilitate research under full patient confidentiality requirement. The demand for tissue banks has grown with rapid advances in basic research. This has occurred in conjunction with the development of molecular assays which have made it possible to examine gene structure and expression in very small samples o the human tumor tissue. There is a great need for researchers to be able to obtain readily available, quality controlled, flash-frozen tumor tissue to understand the mechanisms of growth and differentiation by analyzing DNA and mRNA, protein and matched clinical data (pathology report, radiology report, clinical history, presenting symptoms, survival data, surgical procedures

User Type
  • Mono: A biobank that supports a specific research project, may have few staff members, a small-scale accrual scope with little to no initial intention of releasing or distributing biospecimens to secondary parties
  • Oligo: A biobank that supports several research groups or clinical trials, may or may not be designed to release biospecimens outside their collaborative group
  • Poly: A biobank that has generally a larger accrual scope, resources, and multiple users outside the biobank proper
Poly - Collection aimed at supporting undetermined, multiple users with ethics approved research projects, through a defined access/application mechanism.
